HI Hostel Meknes Reviews
Cheap hostel on the outskirts of Meknes Dec 12, 2010
In terms of value for money, this hostel is very good. I paid 55 dirhams for a night, and I think if you are part of the HI hostel chain network, you get a few dirhams off.
The location isn't that great depending on how tired you are! It's about a kilometre or two away from the city centre. The walk is fairly straightforward and easy though, and if you are tired in the evening, the taxi fare doesn't cost too much. Nonetheless, this is still worth considering if you are tired or are arriving into Meknes at some ungodly hour.
The hostel is very clean and nicely maintained. It was nice to see the cleaners on a couple of occasions, and I was only there for the night!
The hostel is very safe too, whether or not you are in a dorm or not. I asked for a receipt as proof of payment, but really, there is no need for this as they are a friendly hostel who do remember faces!
The bed and sheets were clean too and comfortable enough. Again, they weren't luxury, just of a decent quality and standard that allows you to get some decent sleep. The hostel is targeted at budget backpackers though, so it's good enough!!
Maybe there was a low season, but I didn't think there was much of an atmosphere. They have an courtyard which is nice and relaxing, but I didn't find it to be a great arena to meet other travellers. Likewise, the rooms were full of people, but it just didn't have the vibe that you can chat and make friends with them. I do think it was because of the low season though, and generally, the people there were in pairs or small groups.
Apart from the point about the location, it is worth booking in advance online with these guys. They get snapped up pretty quickly, and it usually isn't the sort of place where you will find a room on the day.
Definitely one for the budget backpacker.
