Surprising sushi restaurant run by bulgarians! Apr 13, 2013
Amazing sushi restaurant in the city center. It is true that it looks like a big restaurant chain and you don't expect to try good food, but I was totally wrong. It is not a typical sushi restaurant, as they have tons of new and exotic dishes! There are so many different options that you need a loooong time to decide... The funny thing is that you will not see a single japanese worker! :) all of them are bulgarian...

Besides the food, the place is very trendy and the staff is amazingly friendly... very nice indeed... They also serve some cocktails and good desserts, although has nothing to do with what you would find in a traditional sushi restaurant.

If you like sushi, go! you will not regret it... very inexpensive too.. it cost us 35€ for two adults and a baby... by the way, they have high chairs for babies...

Last year I tried another restaurant which was very much alike.. and now I remembered... it was in Bucharest! http://www.travbuddy.com/Sushi-Ko-v449654#273612

Good but not so experienced... Oct 14, 2010
You can hardly come across a Japanese restaurant in Sofia. There is a Japanese restaurant which is a branch of HAPPY (Bar & Grill).

This place looked clean and classy. It had free opened-WiFi and what more, clean toilets! The service was good and the food tasted not too bad. All I can say those were the good points.

Now, you must be wondering why did I put 'not so experienced', right? Well, I ordered a Temaki (with salmon and avocado) and I was REALLY shocked and disappointed. I'd NEVER seen a Temaki that small and looking in that way. It was like...the stuffing was squeezed into a tight and small seaweed suit. The seaweed wasn't crispy...another disappointment. If you'd seen how the right/real Temaki is, it should look bigger than the one in the photo and not THAT tightly wrapped (you just roll it into a cone shape then seal the side with a little water). The seaweed would still be crispy and not rubbed with too much water. There should be a small part of the seaweed sticking out (it is part of the edge/corner of the seaweed sheet). *Sigh...* I doubt they know what/how a REAL Temaki should look like.

One Temaki cost 3.99BGN and we ordered two thus they cost 7.98BGN. Drinks was Cappy Peach juice which cost 2.39BGN and a glass of HoeGaarden for 2.49BGN. Total bill, 12.86BGN.

If you're interested to check out and to dine at this place, look out for the Russian church, St Nikolai (opposite/across the road of the restaurant) and the Military Club (which is adjacent to the restaurant).

What can I say? It'll be my first and last there because I know I can get better than this :D (where I come from). I guess it is because they're still new and not opened/experienced to good Japanese food?

Oh well, if you're really craving for Japanese food in Sofia, then you should pop by at this place since the temaki tasted alright (but it didn't look like how it should be).

I loved the place... no doubt is not a traditional sushi place, but it is awesome how they came up with so many different dishes "sushi inspired"... it reminded me to another sushi place we tried in bucharest http://www.travbuddy.com/Sushi-Ko-v449654#273612... definitely is not what we are used to... but It is exciting to see how they play with all flavors, ingredients, colors....

Great review! We have a lot of excellent sushi places here in Los Angeles, but outside of LA/Japan I've yet to have very good sushi. Sounds like this place is decent for a place so far away from either of those places!
