Small Town California. Dec 06, 2008
I live near this very small town here in California. The name of the town is Gustine. Its a charming town that will make you believe that Andy Griffith will be driving by and wishing you a good afternoon. Gustine is world famous for the Portugese Festa. It is the largest in the world and happens around september (Check website for dates). Gustine has a few things to crow about. The towns famous meat and sausage market named Wolfsens. Its one of the best meat deli's in the area and is a good spot to have an excellent sandwich. After eating you should drive to the gustine museum. The older ladies in the museum can give you a free map of all the historical buildings in the town. Granted the oldest building dates back to 1907, but if you want a short walking tour of the town, and have time to waste. I would do the walking tour. On sunday you will find that the town is closed and nobody usually walks the streets. This is the best time to take the walking tour. If you are in Gustine on the first week of December you might catch the local Christmas tree lighting ceremony and the parade. I enjoyed it, and would go back every year to see young children dance around the tree in the center of the town and singing jingle bells and other Christmas favorites. After the lighting comes the parade with John Deere tractors covered in Christmas lights, and 18 wheelers towing children. Gustine has a few things to offer, but its more then that. Its small town america at its finest, and its all here in Gustine, California. Dont forget to check out the antique shops as well.
