Guray Seramik Avanos Reviews
Ceramics Shopping Feb 20, 2011
While in Avanos we stopped by Guray Seramik. When you arrive, the owner comes to greet you and takes you on a tour which begins in the pottery storage area, proceeds to an section where artists apply their paints, and then a there is a demonstration of how the pottery is made at the wheel. It’s an interesting tour that takes about 20-30 minutes and you can learn a little bit about the craft that Avanos is famous for. The real attraction here, however, is the show rooms. These are simply amazing, full of some really fine quality ceramics – many of them one of a kind works of art really. You can see that the owner is really proud of his collection, and there is no pressure to buy anything. He knows his work is quality and if you are a serious buyer, you know it too. I appreciated the hospitality here and the respect showed to the customers. The prices here are very expensive, but this is the finest quality and most artistic ceramics I saw while in Turkey. Although we did not purchase anything (much as I would have liked to) the owner thanked us graciously and escorted us ou when we were finished enjoying the showroom. If you have a chance to stop here, it really is an exquisite collection to see.
For something of decent quality, though not to the high standards of Guray Seramik, there is nearby Kappadokya Seramik (Bahceli Evler Mah. Cavusin Yolu, Avanos, Tel: 0 384 511 40 88). Here you will find many nice pieces at fair prices. In places like this, remember to start bargaining at 1/2 to 2/3 the listed price to ensure you get a fair deal. Most of the prices are overmarked, but you can find some deals for decent pieces if you are willing to bargain some.
