Elephant Trunk Hill is a neat rock formation which actually looks like an elephant drinking from the Li River and it is located at the junction of the Li and Yang Rivers.  Our tour guide told us it was also known as the water-moon arch.  In the distance, it looked to me that there was another elephant drinking water and which I pointed out to our tour guide ... everywhere in Guilin the formations in the rock/limestone seem to looks like something or som…

And we're on the road again, from Guangzhou to Guilin (Guangxi). I wasn't sure what to think of Guilin beforehand; people of TravBuddy give the city good reviews, but the 'packers I met in Hong Kong told me not to bother with it and go directly to Yangshuo. I guess both are right; I liked Guilin and ended up staying another day, but Yangshuo wins in a direct battle. Definitely do both if you have the time. If not, I would recommend Yangshuo. After saying goodbye to Calvin I bo…

We called the same place we had taken the boat tour with this morning and asked to do a day tour of the guilin area as an individual tour.   We were surprised when the same taxi with the same driver pulled up and helen jumped out.  She was apparently the only English speaker available so she got assigned to take us around.  She had never been taken anyone on a tour.  The driver had and sorta called the shots.  Helen was a nice gal and was very cheery. We went…

People i met here, who contributed to and improved my trip: Juliana (Russia) After having a shot too many of rice wine in Yangshuo, we unfortunately missed our train from Guilin to Nanning. Sadly we were not as lucky as in Shanghai, having to pay the full price of another ticket, with not even a partial refund on our unused ones. This meant that we stayed for one more night in the Flowers Hostel and ate what would be our last McDonalds and KFC for at least 3 months, until we reached Bangkok,…

Woke up to a very hot and humid day today, with our first stop being Yi Ma Village to visit the home of Farmer Pan (after getting Noel some tiger balm for his ankle).  Thirteen generations of Mr Pan's family have lived in the house, although the last young ones have left to work in the city.  The house was built by his "general" forebears so would have been a wealthy mansion in it's time - Mr Pan also has to keep up his family name and reputation for strength by doing lots of exerci…

For my last weekend in China, Robin and I flew to a small city in the Mountains in Southern China called Guilin and finally saw what we expected China to be like!  The first day, we took a trip with our hostel to the rice fields.  Our tour started in what they call the "Long Hair Village" and the people, called the "Long Hair People" (not kidding) are an minority in China.  In this village, the men stay at home and take care of the kids and cooking while the wives go out and ea…

Woke to a cool grey day ... or maybe brown ... very often the sky in China is brown due to pollution, desert dust or whatever other reason.  Climbed up to Solitary Beauty Peak then visited the Seven Star Park.  The Peak is one of the several outcrops in town ... it provided a good outlook of the area.  Seven Star Park is a weird combination of a public park, amusement park, zoo, temple etc  that also incoporates a large winding cave.  The cave was probably the hig…

We got up very early 530a to be able to go to Guilin Airport at 8a  and fly back to Shanghai. And we'll meet the rest of the group - SSC. The REAL business begins - we will perform at the Oriental Art Center of Shanhai in three days. Just before we checked out and loaded the bus at the hotel. Vendors already swarmed and ambushed us. It all started that I bought two hand-made aprons for fifteen Yuan (about $2). The vendor saw me boarded the bus and started to push the last…

The last of this group of pictures from Sylvia and David from their trip to China is from the city of Guillin and the wonderful reed flute caves.  They had tried and tried to get a shot without people but never could.  The large group of Chinese visitors ahead of them was just as anxious to get as many good shots as they could too, and took every opportunity to slow down the pace of the tour and snap away with their cameras.  Sylvia finally gave up and got the best she could wi…

Guilin is where we are meeting Phil and Mike our friends from England.  To allow for cockups with logistics we are a day early and I have booked a hotel in Guilin for all of us and have emailed Phil the details. Our 1st experience of Chinese train travel is good, once we have overcome our initial fear when confronted by the surging masses in the ticket hall in Nanning.  We go back after dinner and find the hall much quieter and the guy at the window very helpful.  With a bit of…

How To Buy An XL T-Shirt In China
posted by:

We hiked down from high up in the Longji Rice Paddy fields and caught two buses to Guilin. We had the whole day to waste ahead of our 17 hour train journey to Hong Kong. Most of us went shopping and I restocked on a couple of T-shirts. Before I came away I bought one T-shirt for 40 UK pounds but in China I bought two T-shirts of similar quality for 2 UK pounds each... its mad! Every shop seems to have more assistants than customers and every single one of them wants to help you, it's a litt…
