Guggisberg Cheese Factory Travel Reviews

Cheese Factory and Gift Shop Mar 21, 2008
In the heart of the Doughty Valley just outside Charm, Ohio, is the Guggisberg Cheese Factory. Founded by Alfred Guggisberg, a Swiss cheese maker who came to United States in 1947 brought his art of making Swiss style cheese to America as a new challenge. Soon, Alfred and the Amish in the Doughty Valley area worked a deal to provide a market for the Amish milk. His wonderful abilities as a cheese maker soon became well known for exceptional quality cheese.

Experimenting in developing a new variety acceptable to old and young, Alfred created a cheese with a smooth and mild taste. The particular swiss cheese has smaller holes, and was named "Baby Swiss" by his wife. The cheese became a hit in the area, and by word of mouth, spread to people who came from hundreds of miles away just to purchase his new "Baby Swiss" cheese. Many have tried to imitate his cheese, but to this day, the secret recipe is known only by the family. Today, his son, Richard, continues to produce the original "Baby Swiss" and other cheeses in the Guggisberg Swiss tradition.

Visitors to the Guggisberg Cheese Factory can watch the production of cheese through windows located in the cheese and gift shop. Production runs Monday-Friday 8 am to noon. You can purchase the famous Baby Swiss wheels and other cheeses in the shop or can order online. You are welcome to sample the varieties before you make your purchase. Jams, jellies, Amish homemade noodles, beef sticks and jerky, summer sausage, candies, chocolates, and kitchen supplies are just some of the items available for sale. After sampling the old fashioned Premium Swiss Cheese and the Baby Swiss, we prefered the Baby Swiss and bought a small wheel along with some beef sticks and a jar of the peanut butter spread. It truly is the best swiss cheese I have ever tasted!

Local farmers still provide the fresh milk daily to the factory which in turn will become the Guggisberg Cheese. Treat yourself to the Original Baby Swiss cheese produced in the heart of Holmes County Amish Country.

Today I looked thru your Amish country trip - my American Mormon friend told me about them a while ago - but I never saw the pictures. I love your narration too - thank you!
