Standard Apartment on Mljet Aug 16, 2016
Anita's Guesthouse/Guesthouse Anica is a lovely little place to stay on Mljet if you're looking for an apartment and preferable for a longer stay.

Side note: Unfortunately my experience on Mljet (through lack of my own planning) tainted my experience at the guesthouse a little, but I will try look at it with objective eyes.

If you're going to be based on Mljet for a couple of days or more and have transport (or plenty of money) to explore the island with at ease, then this would be a great place to base yourself. Close to the port of Sobra, the guesthouse is about a half hour/40 minute walk away.

On the downside, most of the important attractions of Mljet are at the other side of the island near Polace. If you are here for just one night it might be a waste of time and money solely based on the location. As I mentioned, due to my own lack of planning (and an unlucky late arrival) I was short on time on the island. I also had to take a taxi across to Polace as there is no public transport, and this cost me a lot of money.

The apartment itself was great. I was in a ground floor apartment with gorgeous sea views. There were shops and restaurants within a hundred yards. A lovely big kitchen area with fridge and stove was at my disposal. I couldn't get the gas hobs to work to boil water for a cup of coffee though, and there was nobody to ask for help as I arrived late in the evening.

It was very clean and had a few basic amenities like towels and a room fan.

The bathroom/shower was also very clean and had working hot water. I had a large, comfortable double bed to myself for the night, which was definitely the highlight. I had a brilliant night's sleep. There was also a wardrobe with hangers and a lot of floor space. It would be an ideal apartment for a couple or duo to stay in to split the cost.

The lady who checked me in and took money (cash payment on arrival) did not actually work at the guesthouse from what I gathered. She was more of a family friend doing Anita a favour. She was lovely and tried to help as best she could, although she spoke little English and was not familiar with the island and so couldn't answer many of my questions. The following morning I rang Anita to get a bit more insight but the signal was bad and so I didn't have chance to meet her or speak with her.

I cannot fault the apartment or cleanliness of it at all -other than not being able to work the gas hobs. It would have helped if I'd had chance to speak with someone who worked/lived there officially. What lets the apartment down for me is its location in relation to the attractions on Mljet. It is quite pricy too for a solo traveller, although the standard is pretty reasonable for the price.

I had the best night's sleep of my entire trip here, and would recommend it for a couple or travelling duo if you have at least a two night stay on Mljet and are able and willing to rent a car.
