Don't go out unless your in a group when it's dark Mar 16, 2011
If your a tourist travelling on your own it's probably not so safe to walk outside when it get's dark and try to avoid streets that look stingy.. If you got a bad feeling about just get a cab. It's not that expensive anyways

Guate Apr 03, 2008
GUATEEEEEE! GUATEEEE! GUATEEEE! Anyone whose spent any significant amount of time in Guatemala...knows the familiar tune. Bus peddlers struggling to stack 100 people in a bus that doesn't quite fit 50. Mochilla Grande, no problemo, will throw it on top. Americano, no problemo; will charge you double.

I quickly learned to love this crazy place. With no shortage of scenic beauties, hospitable people and great comida, Im sad I ever departed.

What to do in Guate? Oh I don't know, attend the market at Chichicastenango (one of the largest in Central America), watch the sunset on Volcano Pacaya as the sun sets over Antigua, eat some frijoles negro and wash it down with some Gallo, take a jungle trek to ancient ruins still yet to be uncovered by Archaelogists, climb to the top of the aforementioned ruin and brush into a leaf that makes your arm go numb (while your guide says don't worry; "you'll be ok" in spanish), listen to Manu Chao while talking international politics around a campfire, "un"officialy teach spanish at a school for children that desperately needs teachers (whomever they may be), kayak on Lake Atitlan, ride with 40 others in the back of a pickup, and eat some mangos with lime and salt.

Did I mention drink some Gallo.

Yes that is true, Guatemala is beautiful. The first time I took one of the buses when I moved here I was terrfied because they fit so many people. Don't forget to mention how all the mayan women seem to have the strongest necks in the world carrying those things on their heads
