After having breakfast next to our gueshouse, we met Alan, our local guide again. This time our plan is to have bamboo boat rafting on Yulong River, Xingping town and Fishing Village. Firstly, we went to Xing Ping by mini bus (at the bus station in Yangshuo, there are regular mini busses to Xingping available). The trip to Xingping town took about 11/2 hours. After reached Xing Ping, we had lunch at his (Alan) relative's restaurant, it was really good. Then we took a small bambo...

And we're on the road again, from Guangzhou to Guilin (Guangxi). I wasn't sure what to think of Guilin beforehand; people of TravBuddy give the city good reviews, but the 'packers I met in Hong Kong told me not to bother with it and go directly to Yangshuo. I guess both are right; I liked Guilin and ended up staying another day, but Yangshuo wins in a direct battle. Definitely do both if you have the time. If not, I would recommend Yangshuo.
After saying goodbye to Calvin I bo...

Elephant Trunk Hill is a neat rock formation which actually looks like an elephant drinking from the Li River and it is located at the junction of the Li and Yang Rivers. Our tour guide told us it was also known as the water-moon arch. In the distance, it looked to me that there was another elephant drinking water and which I pointed out to our tour guide ... everywhere in Guilin the formations in the rock/limestone seem to looks like something or som...

People i met here, who contributed to and improved my trip: Juliana (Russia)
After having a shot too many of rice wine in Yangshuo, we unfortunately missed our train from Guilin to Nanning. Sadly we were not as lucky as in Shanghai, having to pay the full price of another ticket, with not even a partial refund on our unused ones. This meant that we stayed for one more night in the Flowers Hostel and ate what would be our last McDonalds and KFC for at least 3 months, until we reached Bangkok,...

We called the same place we had taken the boat tour with this morning and asked to do a day tour of the guilin area as an individual tour. We were surprised when the same taxi with the same driver pulled up and helen jumped out. She was apparently the only English speaker available so she got assigned to take us around. She had never been taken anyone on a tour. The driver had and sorta called the shots. Helen was a nice gal and was very cheery. We went...

Returning to my room after eating a spot of dinner I was caught off guard by a filthy cockroach scuttling across the floor of my room. With cat like reflexes I grabbed the nearest cup and slammed in down on the ugly blighter.
I left the room safe in the knowledge that I'd caught him and he wasn't going to crawl all over my face when I was asleep. Little did I know that he had a very different plan. On returning later to show George the size of the cockroach I'd caught he'd vanished fro...

Crucero por el rio Lijiang. Nada mas empezar el crucero ya vemos como los vendedores ambulantes se las ingenian para vender, en una balsa de madera se acercan al barco y desde fuera intentan vender su mercancía.

Finally I made it out of Vietnam and am now in China! This is very exciting, I didn't think I would come to China on this trip, and after the week spent in Hanoi waiting for my visa, i am definitely looking forward to it. I arrived in Dongxing today during a power outage. Funny thing about that, I didn't notice. I wasn't planning to stay the night in Dongxing, but life being unexpected and all, you don't always do what was planned. So I crossed the border ...

"Would you like your dog with rice or noodles Sir?" Nanning is not a touristy place but is famous for its dog dishes - that it dishes made of dog, so eating here was always going to be interesting. In fact we managed to avoid dog and managed a good meal of beef, pork and some form of Asian veg; our main problem was with ordering the rice. I later find out that the LP translation for boiled rice actually means fried rice (which I tell them I don't want) so the waitress gets confuse...

Woke up to a very hot and humid day today, with our first stop being Yi Ma Village to visit the home of Farmer Pan (after getting Noel some tiger balm for his ankle). Thirteen generations of Mr Pan's family have lived in the house, although the last young ones have left to work in the city. The house was built by his "general" forebears so would have been a wealthy mansion in it's time - Mr Pan also has to keep up his family name and reputation for strength by doing lots of exerci...

Off to Nanning to get our Vietnam visa.
Well, eventually.
Going against everything I believe in,
we boarded an overnight train to Shanghai, having nowhere to stay and
no ticket out. We arrived shortly after 7am and stumbled into the
ticket office, praying that there was a train to Nanning at some
point! Thankfully there was one later in the afternoon so we decided
to dump our bags and head out. The left luggage section consisted of
an old lady and a cupboard, and she wanted to see...
