Ground Tranportation from Dulles Airport to/from Washington, DC Apr 24, 2009
Here is an alternative if you are not looking to shed $50-$70 for a cab fare, to travel between (IAD) Dulles International Airport, and Downtown Washington, DC.

Dulles Airport is located 26 miles NW from downtown DC. A good 45 minutes to an hour drive. If you are arriving on an international flight to the area, you will be flying into Dulles Airport. As Washington National (DCA) the closest airport to DC, and metro accessible, only allows domestic flights (With exception of Pre-cleared Canada destinations).

The metro (DC's subway/train system) does not extend all the way to Dulles airport at the present time. So here are two economical alternatives to a cab:

1 - Metro-bus service.
WMATA provides Metrobus - Route 5A- service from Dulles Airport to Rosslyn & L'Enfant Metro Station. For a fare of $3.00-$3.10 (CASH ONLY/EXACT FARE/or SmartTrip Card) You can catch the bus on the ground level at the airport. At the respective "Metrobus Stop" sign. The first Metro stop will be Rosslyn Metro Station, from here you can catch the orange and blue line. If you wish to go further; the next Metro stop is L'Enfant Metro Station from here you can catch the Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Green Line. The bus schedule varies. For up to date information, times, and fares you can check: www.wmata.com

2 - Washington Flyer Coach Bus
This is the quickest of the two. The Washington Flyer departs from the arrival level. The bus leaves every 30 minutes from the airport non-stop to West Falls Church Metro Station (Orange Line). The trip takes about 20 minutes, and since the entire trip takes place on the airport toll road, traffic will be minimal. The fare is about $10ow or $18rt (If you are an airline employee, show your badge for discounted fares). For up to date information check http://www.washfly.com and click on the coach service.
