Groot Constantia Jan 28, 2017
We went to Groot Constantia the oldest vineyard in Cape Town. Groot Constantia was founded by Simon van der Stel of the Dutch East India Company. He arrived at the Cape in 1679. He had already gained knowledge of viticulture at his vineyards in Muiderbergh and made full use of this knowledge to establish vineyards in the Cape.

We began our visit here by strolling through the vineyards. They were lined with rose bushes and backed by stunning mountainous scenery - absolutely breathtaking. When we had finished with the vineyards we strolled to the manor house. We paid to wander around it, looking at the period furniture and the garden with its huge bougainvillea bush and boisterous ducks. We then headed to the wine cellar where all the magic of creating wine takes place. Groot Constantia has two restaurants and a deli and offers wine tasting sessions, too.

Great tastings Jun 11, 2008
This place is just great. It is right in town very close to the Tokai area. When you enter the estate, you know you are in for a treat. The wine tasting was very reasonable. You pay for a pass that offers you 5 free tastings. You choose from an extensive list of varietials. The staff was very knowledgable about the region, the wines and proccess. The pourer gave us many more than the five allowed wines including 'Gouverneurs Reserve'. This was a great smooth wine, very drinkable today, but what a differnce a few years will make.

There are large oversized leather couches for relaxing in while sipping your wine, and extensive souvenir shop and, of course, plenty of bottles of wine for sale. We bought the "Pinotage" which was my first experience of this variety. I enjoyed it and brought it home to America.

The tasting includes a souvenir wine glass. I would recommend everyone take a moment to visit here.
