Grizzly Island Tours Bella Coola Reviews
Aug 06, 2007
Whilst in Bella Coola we wanted someone who could show us around.
Grizzly Island Tours came in the cheapest out of all the tour companies in the area. We felt that they offered good value for money as two full 8 hour days cost us $400 for two people, (Plus one day was a Sunday and the other was a Bank Holiday)!
Grizzly Island Tours were happy to cater for our needs. We don't drive, so our guide collected and returned us to our campsite each day.
They offer Angling, River Drifts and Hiking Tours.
We decided on a Hiking Tour and a River Drift the next and also asked our guide Cole if he could take us to one or two of his favorite spots.
While it's true that Cole is younger than some of the other people who offer tours in this area, he was born and raised in Bella Coola and therfore has good local knowledge.
On the first morning Cole took us on a woodland walk, pointing out the various trees and berries, then it was off to look at some beautiful waterfalls, the fish hatchery and then some ancient culturally modified ceder trees. (Wood was taken in planks from these trees without harming them, to build the original buildings in Bella Coola).
Next it was off to see Clayton falls and to have a spot of lunch at Seal Point. Lunch was supplied and consisted of delicious tuna salad sandwiches, salad, homemade muffins and fruit juice. It was nice tucking in, whilst watching the seals play in the water.
Next we headed of to the MGURR Lake trail. The drive up to the trail head was pretty exciting in itself. Then we hiked to the top of the mountain for some a drink and some more of the home-made muffins.
From here were had absolutely spectacular 360 views (see photo), plus it was fun crossing the snow to get there.
Ok so Cole drove us most of the way, but we aren't experinced hikers and Grizzly Island Tours can adapt the tours to suit different abilities.
The next day we went out on a river drift on the Nusatsum River. We just had to sit back and relax while Cole did all the hard work!
Again Cole did a great job at showing us the different mountains, answering our questions, pointing out Eagles and keeping the boat still when we wanted to take photos.
We stopped off at a little Island in the middle of the river, where Cole cooked us some scrummy cod on an open fire, served with baked beans, potato salad and tartar sauce. It tasted good and there was plenty to go round.
Cole took the time to stop opposite the areas of bank where he knew that we might see Grizzly Bears. Fortunately or unfortunately we didn't see any. There are plenty of bears in the area but obviously Grizzly Island Tours can't gurantee that you will definately see them.
All in all we had a very enjoyable time and felt that the days were well tailored for our individual needs, something that may have been lacking if we had gone with one of the larger more expensive tour companies.
