Gringo Pete's Too La Fortuna Reviews

Arenal in the backyard May 30, 2014
I got to Fortuna on Saturday evening during the festivities and bicycle race around the lake so it was not that easy to find the place with available bed. Luckily Fortuna (you can say fortunately heheh) has number of hostels so I just started with knocking on the doors and asking for place to stay. Somehow I stumbled upon one of the legendary hostels in town Gringo Pete’s but they did not have space either so Pete called his other place and sent me there with the firm reservation. Funny thing is that he named other place Gringo Pete’s Too (I was expecting TWO) but both places work in unison and you can get all kinds of tours and recommendations for trips, hikes, natural beauties, places to eat… Both hostels have purple as dominating color so it is easy to spot the building. Gringo Pete’s Too is located just above the bridge and main intersection in the city. Bus station is just two blocks down the road, big supermarkets only block away, sport center across the river and fairgrounds (with serious rodeo) just block away.

While I was there they also had concerts in the sports field for couple nights aside of live music in most of the restaurants.

Hostel his very secure with the guy living above the reception and metal bars protecting the entrance. You get key for the entrance and your room so you don’t depend of people to let you in. Hostel is in two buildings that are connected with small bridges. Bottom floor are dorms and on the second floor you have private rooms. WiFi internet is available all over and they also have computer station that you can use if you are without your own device. Bottom floor features large kitchen area that is free to use. They do have all general things for cooking and storing food and this is the place you’ll find bunch of people planning their activities, eating or just chilling. One of the side tables in the kitchen is full of maps, offers about things to do, transportation tables…

Little green garden has lots of equipment laying on the edges. Safety floating devices, kayaks, boots… things needed for climbing or water sports are all over the place. But the best part of the garden has Papaya trees with incredible amount of fruit hanging. I love Papaya time of the year (and also avocado part of the year)!

My dorm room had good lockers, six beds and bathroom as a part of the room. It was a bit dark and cramped but perfectly clean and good for sleeping. Bathroom was big with warm water.

Feeling of this place is very cozy with bunch of wooden chairs, benches, places to chill, hammocks, nice balcony on the second floor and chill lounge terrace. View of the second floor is on the volcano, and sunsets are nothing less than spectacular. Tours that are offered by the hostel are a bit cheaper than in the agencies, but they are still much overpriced. You can cover most of the attractions in the area for 2-3 times less money.
