Grgich Hills' Chardonnay Reviews
From the Vineyards of Napa Valley Jul 03, 2010
The lacious aromas of baked pear fills your nose when you smell it. I was torn between the smell of nuts and unprocessed honey smell. Bright acidity and great balance of oak and body. Grgich Hills Cellar was founded July 4, 1977 by Miljenko "Mike", Grgich and Austin Hill of the Hills Bros. Coffee family. Austin owned established vineyards and had an extensive business background, and Mike had just made his reputation as one of the world's great winemakers.
In the now-historic 1976 Paris Tasting, Mike's 1973 Chateaed Montelena Chardonnay best the top white Burgundies to win first place, shocking the international wine community and bringing the United States to the forfront of the wine world. In 2007 the name was changed to Grgich Hills estate in recogniton of their wines being completey estate grown using biodynamic and organic farming techniques. The Chardonnay is unfiltered and unfined, aged in oak.
