Grøften Copenhagen Reviews
Great place for traditional Danish food May 28, 2010
One of my favourite places in Tivoli is the Restaurant Grøften (The ditch). I have now been coming there for many years and the food and the service always at a consistent level. It is not a place with gourmet cuisine but a place where you come for the atmosphere and to have fun.
Grøften is one of the oldest places in Tivoli; it opened back in 1874 under the name Teatercafeen, but due to the fact that it is situated in a low part of Tivoli, it was named Grøften or the Ditch. Grøften has also a really nice back garden, where it is wonderful to sit if it's warm and nice weather. The garden is also the place you feel like you are back in a nostalgic time; the tables has red and white chequered table cloths on and the place is surrounded with multi coloured lamps in the evenings.
The reason that you see small blue, red, yellow and green models of blimps hanging in the place goes back hundred years ago, when the owner of the place was air balloon captain Lauritz Johansen, who made the place extremely popular by being friends with all the guests.
It is a wonderful place to eat the Danish traditional smørrebrød with snaps and cold beer.
