Arthurs pass

Arthur's pass was truly amazing. We drove through beautiful scenery, snowy mountains either side of us and a windy road ahead. We parked up at the visitor centre and had a walk up to a roaring waterfall with crystal clear water. It was very cold though so we layered up with gloves, hats and scarves and had our car sweets to keep us going! We drove onto Greymouth, a very non discript town with not a lot in it. It was dead at 5pm when we arrived and stayed dead all night eventhough there was...

Not really only Greymouth, more so the trip from Hanmer Spings to Franz Josef Glacier. Driving across the South Island was great, it was so beautiful. Rivers cutting through the landscape like snakes, old gold mining sites covered in spiders webs, lots of lakes, bridges and the perfect weather still, I'm soooo lucky can't believe it. I will let the pictures do the talking.

Trip to Shantytown to try our luck at panning for gold.
posted by:
Dec 08, 2007
Shantytown is a replica of 1880s town. It was opened as a tourist attraction in 1971, and the area was the site of a real gold rush from around the 1860s. The town is made up of around 30 historic buildings some of which were constructed in the early 70s and a few that have been rescued and restored. I was particulary fond of the church, originally from No Town in the Grey Valley and built in 1865.(See photos, inside & out). It is even possible to g...

greymouth... the capital of the south island west coast where all the bus companies stop and many other passing by travellers spend a night surely must be hell of a town with a spectacular backpacker nightlife? HELL NO this town is dead everyone is doing a one nighter here... for a reason! the only activity worthwhile doing is the brewery tour! 20 bucks for a (loooong!) local beer brewery tour with tons of samples and a 20 minutes "the tap is yours" ending... plus a bbq ...

Christchurch and the Tranz Alpine journey. By Leanne.
posted by:
Oct 10, 2006 - Oct 23, 2006
We had booked to go on the Tranz Alpine train journey that goes from Christchurch on the east coast of the south island to Greymouth on the west coast. We had been told that there is nothing much to see in Greymouth itself and so we booked a day return journey...We realised when we got on the train at 8am that it was a four and a half hour ride there and ....yup, a four and a half hour ride back! This was gonna be a long day we thought, but this train ride is meant to be one of the ...

Christchurch to Greymouth

The Joy of Surfing
posted by:
Mar 19, 2008 - Mar 28, 2008
It is Tuesday morning and I am sitting on the cliffs of Cobden Tip watching Andrew surf. Andrew says it is the best surfing he has ever done.  He has to climb down rocks and time it just right to get out to the breaks before he gets smashed against the rocks. Scary for me thrilling for him. I see 4 dolphins swimming by. Good omen. Hopefully no sharks are around   Surfing is kind of like life. To get the most out of it you have to take risks. You have to work hard to get out to whe...
