Greyfield Inn Cumberland Island Reviews

Greyfield Inn is an experience. It is on the pricey side, but you have to consider the location - an island - and factor in the costs of transportation for guests, food, fuel, etc. To arrive and depart you must take a ferry. The Inn has ties to one of the most prestigious families of the 19th century, the Carnegies, and is impressive. The actual Inn is a beautifully upkept mansion full of family heirlooms. Your experience will be a trip back in time. If you're the type that can just sit back and relax with a good book or watch time go by, then you'll really enjoy it. The front porch is the perfect place to do both.

As far as ammenities are concerned there is relatively no technology (electricity yes), hair dryers are provided and there are othere items available for purchase in the gift store. Transportation consists of bicycles or your own feet. They do have guided tours conducted in vehicles, but these vehicles are only used for this purpose and for the groundsworkers to get around. If you're looking to 'get away from it all' (cliched), you should come and stay. Bring a good book (or two), but they also have a large library. The rooms are very clean and the room (master suite) my husband and I occupied in the main house was wonderful! The bed was very large and extremely comfortable. The only downside was that you have to share the bathroom with two other rooms. If you're lucky no one else will be occupying these during your stay. The water is also iron rich so there's a slight odor and taste. All meals are included and none disappointed during our stay. Usually a fresh catch is included on the evening menu. Everyone staying dines together for breakfast and dinner so you do get to know your fellow guests. If you enjoy interacting with people, getting to know and listening to the stories of others then this will be a highlight of the trip.

The location, the island itself is a place that I fell in love with as a little girl. There are daily excursions out to the island provided by the National Park Services. It's a protected island off of the coast of GA - the southern most of the state, and is considered a National Seashore. It really is a jewel of a place. It is a fairly large island and is impossible to cover by foot. No new buildings and no one is allowed to live here unless they were grandfathered in by the law. This island offers a glimpse of what the eastern seaboard looked like before it experienced explosive growth and the subsequent degredation of the environment. There are fairly strict rules in place to prevent any degredation of this island. Staying at Greyfield allows you to see more of the island than if you took the Park Service's daily outings. I was able to see much more of the island in this visit than in all of my previous visits combined.

Our stay at Greyfield did not disappoint. We chose it to celebrate our first year anniversary. It was perfect for romance and to connect as there are no distractions. We will definitely return someday and hopefully have a longer stay. I recommend this place to anyone who just wants a quiet getaway or a place to reconnect with their loved ones.
