Greenwoods Spa Sep 07, 2014
Greenwoods hotel and spa is in Stock, near Billericay in Essex. My sister got married there. The wedding went very, very well, but in some ways the hotel mystified me.

The food is great, as is the Events Organiser, and they couldn’t go out of their way far enough to make sure Emma had a great day. The food for the wedding was lovely - including the vegetables, and that’s incredibly hard to get right for 50 odd people all at once. The waiting staff were all great. Breakfast is fantastic, and unusually for a British hotel they can do great hollandaise sauce for Eggs Benedict and so on, even for a large party arriving all at once. The main lounge area is absolutely spectacular, with lots of carved dark wood, fireplaces and gorgeous upholstery. There is a beautiful garden, the village is lovely, and the bar is well stocked. It would have to be, frankly, for a wedding in my family.

The spa is lovely, and if you are staying *and go before you check out* it’s great. Once you check in, even if you have been staying all weekend and only want to go for the hour before your train, it’s £40 just to use the pool. And there is no free use of the pool if you book a massage or something. The treatments are well above the average I’m used to seeing, even allowing for the hotel being so close to London, although I am sure they are very good. The pool, sauna and jacuzzi are all brand new and very nice indeed but £40 when you’ve been staying with them seems really steep.

All the staff were lovely, and very polite, but under-trained. The reception staff seemed totally untrained, and apparently its impossible, in a hotel that at full rack rate costs nearly £200 a night, to cut a second key so a couple staying in the same room don’t have to share a key. It took them about ten minutes of looking completely bewildered to check us in at all. They offer to help carry the bags up, but actually doing it involves about twenty minutes of trying to find the barman and then giving up. Obviously, I’m not such a snob or so fragile that I mind carrying my bags, but it’s strange that they can offer but not actually do it. And when we asked them to look after our bags so we could visit the (very, very expensive) spa after we had checked out, they said of course, but then left them in a heap right by the front door. Including the laptops. Again, given the average hostel is prepared to at least move your bag behind the reception desk, this utterly confuses me - surely a 4 star hotel would say to its receptionist, if someone asks you to put the bags safe, don’t leave them by the door? And there's a luxury shower with side sprayers, but they are limescaled to the point only one or two of them work - limescale remover is cheap!

There are some fully accessible rooms if you’re disabled, but do tell them because, as I’ve mentioned, if you’re upstairs there’s no lift and no help with the bags. The room without a discount is about £160 for the night, which is above average for the area but not too bad for such nice surroundings so close to the capital. It’s a £10 or so cab ride from Billericay, which is about 30 minutes from London Liverpool Street by rail. Some bedrooms are more refurbished than others - I’d suggest asking to take a look but I think that would just confuse the poor reception team beyond their ability to cope. Bar bills are about what you’d expect from a nice hotel.

In fairness, they changed hands 6 months ago. I just think 6 months is long enough to show the perfectly charming but incredibly perplexed receptionist where the "find booking" button is.

Sounds like it might be under new management and they are still working the kinks out.
