Airconditioned series of buildings selling many things from computers to pearls to clothes Nov 19, 2012
Greenhills Shopping Center is a long established shopping center in San Juan City in the middle of Metro Manila. There are numerous buildings that comprise the overall center, with a combination of indoor and outdoor themes. These buildings are connected by pathways and bridges.

Greenhills has over 2,000 stores, plus a Roman Catholic chapel and a Muslim prayer room. Many of the merchants selling pearls are Muslims originally from Mindanao, where pearls are cultured and farmed.

There are distinct areas that cater to various clientele. Virra Mall is known primarily for computer shops, and also has a branch of Ace Hardware and . There is a covered area which is air conditioned and houses clothes, textiles and jewelry (especially pearls) on the ground floor; the cellphones, electronic gadgets and furniture are on the second floor. In the periphery are several restaurants and food stalls, both international chains as well as local outfits. Finally, there is a large supermarket to complete the shopping experience.

If visiting Greenhills, be warned of the horrible parking situation. It is uncommon to be waiting for a parking slot for up to 30 minutes or more if one visits on a holiday or weekend after payday. The traffic is not limited only to the vehicles, but human traffic as well. But for many, the hassles are worth it because there are bargains to be found all over. Note though that most transactions are done in cash, and if paying by credit card (for those establishments that accept it), you may be levied a "surcharge" - or to put it better, you won't get the cash discount price. And just like any crowded shopping center, be wary of potential pickpockets and touts offering you bootleg copies of the latest movie blockbuster.

Overall, the best buys here include pearls, clothes (again be warned that many are imitation of popular brands), cellphones and accessories (warning again, some cellphones could be stolen items) and computers (there are so many selections to windows shop for price comparisons before making a final purchase).

Travelers to Metro Manila should experience Greenhills shopping at least one if they have the time (at least half a day).
