Hit and miss restaurant Sep 22, 2017
N30°15'10.8" E120°09'33.0" (WGS-84) This Lonely Planet must-visit restaurant attracts huge crowds and people cue in front for a table inside. Their queuing system with paper tickets works efficiently and our expected long wait was limited to 20 minutes. If you can, walk in the afternoon by for an evening reservation. The restaurant itself is on the fourth floor. Grandma’s Home Restaurant is a neighbour on the same floor in the building, but with entry around the corner. Green Tea Restaurant has seven other branches in town, like on 83 Long Jing Road, west of the West Lake. According to Lonely Planet, Green Tea Restaurant is renowned for itself superb, sensational and inexpensive food.

Ordering at Green Tea Restaurant was made very complicated: scan the QR-code on the table and select dishes direct through the Chinese menu that will load up on your smartphone. No English- or picture-menu for non-Chinese guests without a modern smartphone. No help from staff members either. After some real struggle with online translation of the printed Chinese menu, devoid of English or pictures, we just pointed at food and drinks on adjacent tables. We ordered fresh mashed fish Wenzhou style, sizzling scrimp with crispy rice, sautéed bullfrog in chili, Grandma’s Veal, rice and tofu and green vegetable. Not every food item ordered was delivered. This was clearly hit and miss ordering. As foreign visitors, we felt a bit unwelcome.

The food itself was a hit and miss too. We loved the peanut butter with vegetables, the celery and meat dishes, but the chicken with bamboo and the fish soup was a bit flavourless. Not sensational, although inexpensive. The low-lit dining rooms had a brick-finish and rows of clay teapots, but the constant movement of staff members and guests made our diner not relaxed. Cleaning was substandard. Tables were still sticky after cleaning and the floor was squalid, like a football stadium after a final.

This Lonely Planet must-visit restaurant did not shine during our visit in August 2017. Complicated ordering, mediocre food, unhelpful staff members and a dirty restaurant. Not recommended.
