Hidden gem with great live music Apr 02, 2012
Tucked away in an old warehouse a short walk away from the main underpass of Brighton's railway station, one would need to set out with the intention to go to the green door store in order to find it. When you’re near the area it’s situated in, following the music to a discrete green door is the best clue to finding it. Occasionally there are crowds of people standing outside what seems to be a small green door going to an old abandoned building.

This is one of the best venues in Brighton for live music. Most of the time entry is free and the bands that play here are very good regardless of the genre, however if you like a particular sort of music it may be worth checking the web site before turning up as the bands play anything from folk or acoustic right through to heavy metal or techno.

The decor and atmosphere are the other main reason to come here. The original brick walls in all their naked glory are still there and in some cases parts of the wall have been knocked down low enough to step over but the green door frame is still there giving this a derelict feel but in a distinctively charming way. There are still some of the old industrial machines dotted about which further adds to the vibe of the place. The stage is at the back of the venue and is large yet doesn’t feel like it is encroaching on the dance floor like in so many other live music bars.

The crowd are generally friendly and range from hipsters and the Brighton uni art/music crowd to professional couples there to see a specific band perform or for a particular music night. I've never seen trouble here and the vibe has always been friendly and relaxed.

The drinks are priced average for the area around the station which is reasonable considering most nights entry is free. There are the usual big brands behind the bar. There is also a smoking area just outside which means not having to awkwardly barge through a queue to get back in.

The only downside to this place I could find is a significant one. The Green Door Store is cash only, so this means absolutely no card service from the bar. This can be very irritating if the queue outside is large and you need to queue back up to get in, the nearest cash point is around a 5 min walk away in Brighton's main train station.

The Green Door store is definitely some where I’d go to finish off a night with friends or take a date I wanted to impress. It feels like you're going somewhere hidden and are therefore 'in the know' when venturing there.
