A wonderful site Sep 12, 2012
I can't actually remember the cost but I know it was nothing very great - it's a long time ago now but hopefully Zimbabwe will eventually recover its appeal for visitors.

Now there are only ruins - but what ruins of what was a great settlement with strong walls and imposing buildings. The buildings are impresive not only by virtue of their size and shape but also for the brickwork ornamentation. The British rulers of Southern Rhodesia - as Zimbabwe was called when a colony - were not prepared to acknowledge that any black civilisation had produced anything of this magnitude and the place was barely known.

It is nowhere near prehistoric but dates probably from the 16th century and the end of the settlemant was probably brought about by natural causes such as exhaustion of the food supply.

As well as the remains there is a very small rural settlement left and my daughter had a session with a wise woman in one hut. I have to say that it was not very accurate.
