Great and smoky park to see and visit Jun 29, 2011
Located in 2 states, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is the only park in the National Park that does not charge admission, due to an agreement that was set back in the 1930’s, between the federal government and the state of Tennessee. But free admission is not the only reason why this park is the most visited national park in the US.

The main road takes you through the Great Smoky Mountains, also known as the Smoky Mountains, or simply, the Smokies. These are a group of mountains that runs along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, and part of the much larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The name “Smoky” comes from the fact that there is fog over the mountains, looking like… you guessed it, smoke!

There are various things to do in the park, like hiking and seeing wildlife. And some viewing spots to get a really good look at the Smokies. One of them is Clingmans Dome, which is an observation tower. Getting there is not easy. But once you get there, and reach the top of the observation deck, the views are very much worth it! Of course, Clingmans Dome is not the only good spot, as there are many others.

There are visitor centers on both sides of the park, near the entrances, which are connected by the main road. I know that the one on the Tennessee side, right by Gatlinburg, has a small museum and where you can pick up a map and get some information from the rangers. While the museum looks interesting, it can be skipped if time is short, as the mountains themselves, are the main reason to visit.

There are numerous waterfalls, all of which, require hiking. And each hiking trail has a difficulty level. I went to Grotto Falls, which is one of the easier ones to get to. And the one you can get behind the falls, which I thought, was awesome!

There are other things to do, like visit some historical sites in the park. And even walk on part of the Appalachian Trail, which runs through the park.

After visiting this park as an adult, I can definitely see why this place is both great and smoky. Well worth the time!
