Beautiful park in Eastern US May 22, 2012
The Great Smoky Mountains are an exceptional range in the Eastern US. It is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers stunning views and unspoiled nature. Every outdoor activity is done here from hiking and fishing to skiing to whitewater sports. The olympics were held on the Ocoee river on the southern edge of the park. The park boasts the greatest diversity of wildlife and plant species in America. There are many trails for hiking and bears are common on the mountain roads and cutbacks. Many places to camp as well.

The combination and series of mountains that do not end in the horizon makes the Great Smoky Mountains a very special place. You have to believe in God in this place even if you are atheist; at least at the moment: a senior lady said next to me. It is the first "standard Windows desktop wall paper" picture I see it in real. You can see mountains if it is clear sky up to 80 miles distance.

Great Smokey Mountains National Park Oct 15, 2008
On the border between North Carolina and Tennessee you will find some of the greatest natural scenery in the eastern part of the USA. High in the mountains is a big national park - one of the biggest easts of the Rockies. And just to make it even better - it is free of charge.

You can spend a short time just driving through on your way from one side of the mountains to the other or you could possibly spend days walking the trails in the park if you like - or go through while you are doing this section of the Appalachian Trail. The park is open all year and 24 hours a day hence you don't need to rush in before closing - but of course there is not much reason to go when it is dark - you want to see the scenery around the park.

You can visit the park all year but during winter some of the road may be closed. I went during the fall which may be one of the best times to visit to look at all the fall colours around the park. There are several driving routes to supplement the walking trails for those less fit or eager to go hiking. Hence everyone can enjoy the spectacle of the park in their own pace.

At each of the main entry points to the park you will find a visitor centre where there are a small exhibition and rangers who can give you whatever information you would like.
