Great Marsh Kayak Tours Yarmouth Reviews
A great, affordable way to get out on the water and see nature Aug 15, 2009
I've wanted to kayak the waters of Cape Cod for a while now and I finally did it. After researching a few kayak rental companies, I settled on Great Marsh Kayak Tours (which I will refer to as GMKT) because they seemed to be one of the few that offers actual tours. Most of the others only offer kayak rentals and you go out on the water yourself. I liked the idea of a tour so I could get used kayaking and get familiar with the area since I had never done it before.
GMKT operates year round with varying schedules. During the high summer season they offer two daily tours, the first at 9:30 A.M. and the second at 2:00 P.M. I called GMKT to make a reservation and the owner, Bob, was very friendly and helpful. He explained what the tour would be like and gave suggestions about what items to bring along.
GMKT offers a few different tours and takes reservations for groups. My husband and I went on the "Naturalists Dream Tour" which was 3-4 hours and $50/adult ($35/child under 14). On the day of the tour we met Bob at his little office which is located on the property of the Zooquarium. Bob gave us a 'dry bag' which is a water proof bag to store the items we were taking in the kayak with us which can be stowed under bungee cords on one end of the kayak. He offered us single person kayaks or a tandem kayak (2 person) and told us the pros and cons of each. We chose to do tandem. After paying, Bob directed us where to meet his partner Richard. It was just a short ride (less than a 1/4 mile) up the street.
Upon arriving at the spot where we would take off from, we met Richard who was very friendly and fitted us to a kayak complete with oars and life vests. When all of the people going on the tour had arrived, Richard went over the safety rules, how to use the kayaks and oars and basic rules of the water. Once we were all set we each got into the water and on our way. There were about 6 kayaks in our group.
This was such a lovely way to see the beauty of Cape Cod. Being in a small group on kayaks, it was easy to stay together and hear Richard as he pointed out birds and landscapes and told us some interesting facts about the Cape. The water was beautiful and so easy to maneuver through. Partway through the tour we pulled over to the side of a marsh and watched a family of Ospreys as they went about their business. Richard told us all about them and more about everything we were seeing. As we moved along we took in the beautiful surroundings and enjoyed cruising at an easy pace. Richard steered the group to a small beach where we got out to stretch our legs. Here he spoke about native shells in the area and horseshoe crabs. After a nice little break, we got back into our kayaks and paddled around some more. We came around a bend to a large beach in South Yarmouth where we again got out to have lunch and use the restrooms if necessary. This area was beautiful as there was a rock jeti along the shore and a beautiful beach. About a half hour later we all got back into our kayaks for the lovely journey back.
We had such a great time and would definitely do this again. It's a great place for beginners since you are guided throughout the tour. And it's such a great, affordable way to get out on the water and experience the natural beauty of Cape Cod.
