Great Gable Wasdale Head Reviews
Treat with care - but it's a great ascent Nov 14, 2010
This, like Blencathre (review,) is one of England Lake District's peaks that has an instant appeal to anyone seeing it. I think that its separation from, as well as proximity to, other peaks may be the reason. Seen towering above Wastwater, it is a point that has to be reached.
My favourite route up is by no means direct. It starts by taking the 'Pony Route' to Styhead Pass but then avoiding the direct path up (not that there's anything wrong with it) and following the South Traverse, otherwise known as the climbers' traverse, to a point where climbers can be watched on Napes Needle, a formidable rock detached from the main slope. Have no illusions; the traverse is not just for climbers - Napes Needle is; it's classified as hard severe.
You have to gosome distance more or less circuiting the mountain before you find a path up - but the feeling of elation is as realas anywhere in England when you get there.
Sorry I have lost my photos but there are some great ones on th website given.
