The tallest sitting Buddha in the whole country, but it's the sweeping views that impress the most! Dec 01, 2016
The sighting of this large Buddha says it all. But you realise the size of the statue when you see people cycling around and walking at the base. To say it's huge is an understatement.

As is wont in most Buddhist temples, there are some amazing small gold coloured statues along the area which is very well cemented.

There's a beautiful temple inside, again no photos allowed (although the Priest did allow me to take one), and our guide Nawang was explaining how the Chief Priest of the country splits his time in between Punaka and makes all the decisions for the entire country whilst the PM and King focus on the admin affairs. There are also some wonderful carvings of the animals which was great amusement for the kids.

The Buddha inside is a 4 headed Buddha representing the 3 incarnations, and the 4th that will follow soon. Around the walls were showcases of tiny little Buddhas. It was honestly so well done. Although, I must say that being used to visiting more austere Hindu temples, at times it felt a bit OTT.

The real "other" big draw to this place though is sweeping views of Thimphu Valley. One can see everything from the city centre, the various buildings scattered around the valley, and even views of the only highway that leads out of Thimphu into other parts of the country.

All in all, very surreal. And a definite must-visit!
