A NYC Institution Dec 23, 2012
Gray's Papaya is a New York institution, open 24/7, year round, it's high quality (100%) beef 'dogs have been furnishing New Yorkers with cheap eats for almost three decades. Gray's takes its name from founder Paul Gray and the "papaya" refers to the papaya fruit drink sold there.

The first time I stumbled (literally) into Gray's was after a night out on the tiles back in '07 and I went for a revisit this year on my trip to New York and Boston for a cheap and filling lunch. Currently they are reflecting the times with their 'recession special', two hotdogs, with a choice of toppings, and a drink for $5, bargain! The juices are as good as the hotdogs and are made from fresh produce; not being a fan of Papaya I opted for the 'Coconut Champagne' which was delicious! If you are after a quick snack split the Recession Special, but if you're a bit hungrier then go for one each.

So for a (cheap) taste of NYC all I can say is head to Gray's...well unless you hate hotdogs!

Cheap but basic Jan 29, 2010
Went to the one in Greenwich, on 6th Ave, between 8th and 9th.

Basic take away restaurant, but with places to stand inside. Got the 'Recession Special' for $4-45 and while you can't knock the price, it didn't look particularly appetising.

Two small hot dogs and a cup of papaya juice, it will fill a gap in the short term, but not satisfy your hunger.Even i managed to finish them, which for those that know how much I eat (not) says something :D

Bit of a New York institution, so I had to try it, but I did it ONCE, despite one of the other outlets being right across from the subway at 72nd Street/Broadway. Would keep you going though if you are on a tight budget.

Dirt Cheap Hot Dogs plus an amazing papaya drink. You can't visit NYC and not have one of these dogs. Quick easy and tasty.

A great place for cheap eats!

Gray's Papaya has come out in a lot of popular NY TV shows and movies (How I Met Your Mother being one I remember most)! Claiming to serve up the best Frankfurter you'll ever taste, Gray's Papaya was more memorable to me for the papaya drink than the hot dog! I am not a fan of onions but I tried the onion sauce with the sauerkraut on the dog and it was quite tasty! The casing on the hot dog was just crispy enough without being burned or losing any flavor. However, the papaya drink was absolutely amazing! Fresh, fruity and creamy at the same time!

They were having a Recession special for about $3.50 for 2 dogs and a drink at the time so head over for a light snack!

If you're in NYC, Gray's Papaya is one place you absolutely have to eat at.

A few years ago, Gray's Papaya was featured in a Food Network show, so when I went to NYC two Thanksgivings ago (to watch them blow up the parade balloons) and saw the place, I knew I had to go in. It was so good, I went again this year. The food is great and the prices are unbelievably cheap!

Their all beef hot dogs are ridiculously crispy and with the awesome deal of two dogs and a drink for $3.50, they're unbeatable. They don't have ketchup at Gray's Papaya, but it's unnecessary when you've got the Gray's toppings on it.

The drinks at Gray's Papaya are pretty good...not your typical juices. They're a little watery but it's because they're fresh and made from the fruits they're named for. I've had the papaya (I don't even like papaya, but the drink was awesome), the piƱa colada, and the coconut drinks. All really great and refreshing.

Five stars for their juices! I'm not a hot dog fan but their Papaya drink was a shockingly refreshing uppercut to my taste buds. I couldn't get enough of it. Okay, I did have enough of it, so then I tried the Pina Colada and the Orange and WOWZERS those were delicious too!
