Grassington Feb 21, 2017
Grassington received its market charter in 1282 so it’s long been an important village in Upper Wharfedale, In the 18th century lead mining became the main industry but when that dwindled due to cheap imports the residents had to look elsewhere for employment and many moved to other mining areas. However, a new industry was to bring renewed fortunes to Grassington – tourism. Being an attractive village set in beautiful countryside, Grassington is a natural destination for those looking for a pleasant day out – these days there are lots of shops radiating out from the cobbled market square – you can look for designer clothes, outdoor wear or local crafts – and of course there are plenty of places to eat and drink. The small Upper Wharfedale Folk Museum in the village illustrates Grassington life through the ages – it’s a really nice village and one that people keep returning to.
