Tiny Town With an Interesting History Mar 03, 2017
Grass Range is a town of about 100 (down 28%% since 2000) located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 87 and Montana Highways 19 and 200 in Fergus County in Central Montana. Cattlemen followed herds of cattle through the Missouri Breaks and fell in love with this "grassy range". They vowed to return and settle down in this area. By 1883 there were enough settlers to request a post office which was named "Chamberland". Then as now, the main industry was agriculture. The town was located along the main route between Fort Maginnis and Musselshell. By 1910 the town had grown rapidly and the name was changed to "Grass Range". The town then went into a rapid decline in the 1930s when a severe drought, an infestation of grasshoppers, and the Great Depression hit. A few hardy souls remained and the town lived on, much as it does today.
