Affordable weekend breakaway Jun 12, 2011
In June 2010 I went with a friend to Granietkop Game Lodge for the weekend. It’s a game lodge for hunters, only bow hunting is allowed. Granietkop is about an hour’s drive from JHB and PTA on the Thabazimbi road. What make s this lodge different, is that it caters for the whole family, women, children, hunters & non-hunters. Activities for non-hunters include horseback riding, quad biking, hiking, cycling and game drives. For the hunters there is also a 3D archery course.

You have two options to choose from, either self catering, or 3 inclusive meals per day. We took the self catering option. As the lodge was not fully booked that weekend, we were only 6 people; we had the whole lodge to ourselves. We stayed in the luxury tents, which were really nice, as you can see on the photos. The bathroom was stunning and we had an outdoor shower.

The personnel were very helpful, friendly and made sure we are looked after in the best possible way. I’d love to go there again, not because I’m a hunter, or even like hunting, but it was a weekend one could just relax and enjoy the surroundings. It’s very close from all the hustle and bustle of the city, which makes this a perfect place for a breakaway weekend.

Prices are very reasonable, if you take the self-catering you pay about €35 per person, should you decide on the all inclusive 3 meal option, you would pay €75 per person. Some of the activities are free, but you'll pay for the horse riding, quad biking and use of the Jacuzzi.

One thing that might be a problem for some people was the fact that there was NO cell phone reception, for me, this was a good thing, for some it might be inconvenient.

3D - target shooting (rubber/platic animals) in the bush, think there are about 15 targets.

Definitely looks relaxing with natural surroundings, but some nice amenities too so you don't have to "rough it" too much. BTW - What's a 3D Archery course?
