Twice I want backpacking from the top mountain pass leading to Grandaddy Lake (you can google it). It's a one horse town (actually about 1000 horses but only about 10 houses from what I could see).
Take a 4 wheel drive with a spare AND an instant tire repair kit (the loose shale on the mountain roads can wreak havoc on the tires)! You can rent horses at the ranch at the bottom of the trail or you cna drive up the trail to the trailhead, then backpack about 5 miles to a grand, solitude destination with glacier filled lakes leading far into the High Uinta Wilderness with some of the best trout fishing ever! On the 4th of July 2 years in a row, I backpacked up there only seeing 2 other people during an entire week! I brought a solar heated bag for a hot wilderness shower, dried food and a cooking stove. The day trips are incredible and the scenery and blue lit starry nights are breathtaking! The mountain flowers, nesting songbirds and wildlife are stunning. String your food at least 300 feet away up a tree (bears) and sleep with your pistol and all will be well. The Ranger told me 2 legged creatures in the wilderness were more trouble than the bears--however I brought it just in case. In July, it freezes and night (very early spring in the wilderness) and you may get 70 degree days or snow- all depends on mother nature! |
