Best Hotel in Dalhousie Oct 10, 2014
On a recent business trip to India, I ended up in the old British Army vacation town of Dalhousie in the southern Himalayas. Perched at about 6,000' above sea level, Dalhousie is hardly in the thick of the mountain range, but it is certainly unique in that the triple canopy jungle environment allows for quite interesting flora and fauna as well as some pretty breathtaking views. Taking full advantage of its location, the Grand View Hotel lives up to its name. A former British Officer's quarters, the hotel features 2 buildings with the most exclusive rooms on the higher floors, obviously because of the best views. I was fortunate enough to have a room on the top floor, and the view was... grand. I though the size of the room was excellent, and it was clean and tended to every day. Although the room had a patio and the weather was nice enough to keep the door open, it was ill advised to do so because the local monkeys would not hesitate to enter the room to see what they could find for food. Since Dalhousie is typically a tourist destination, I was a little out of place as a business traveler. They did have internet (Wi-Fi) however it was in and out for strength and intermittent at best when it was working. Laundry service was available and it was timely and inexpensive. The restaurant was open every morning and evening from 0815 to 1030 for breakfast and dinner and was included in the room rate. Should you desire a meal in between, they did have a room service menu available. Food quality was good and offered a good selection. They have a game room on the top floor with amusements and the hotels location was within 2 hours drive of all of the most popular sites. I wouldn't mind staying here again the next time my travels bring me through Dalhousie, however, I may opt to stay a little closer to the airport; there are 3 airports that you can fly into but 2 out of 3 of them are 4 hours and another is about 2.5 hours. The trick is to find a flight that is actually scheduled as the weather in that region can turn quickly. Overall, I was very pleased with this property and would recommend

I never know how to choose which cost category to put my reviews in. This was a great hotel, and the most expensive in the town, but still only about $US35 a night for a suite. That's much more than we paid for a room anywhere else in India.

The hotel was built in 1947, just after Indian indepencence, but it still has the feel of a British Raj-era hotel. There's lots of wood, and the views from the terrace over the Kangra valley are superb.

We had a suite, consisting of bedroom, living room and bathroom; much more comfortable than the places we were used to staying in. The lack of heating made it a bit cold in December, but they gave us a small fan heater which just about did the job. The food in the restaurant was excellent Indian fare.

This is a great place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle (the town as much as the hotel).
