Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Overview

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is a large park that coveres 1.9 million acres of land in southern Utah. This region is known for it's colorful and unusual sandstone rock formations. These formations include slot canyons; steep, narrow passageways carved through thousands of years of violent flash floods.

Before heading into back country, you should always register in a ranger station and check on current conditions. Thunderstorms are common during the summer which can trigger very sudden and deadly flash flooding particularly in the slot canyons.

Lake Powell is nearby. Swimming and boating is permitted at the lake. This man made lake was created by the controversial Glen Canyon Dam that dams the Colorado River.

There are many famous attractions surrounding Grand Staircase Escalante; Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Glen Canyon, etc. Comparing to these big-name parks, Grand Staircase Escalante is much less visited and less touristy; therefore, you can experience more untouched wilderness and its beauty.
