Grand Okan Alanya Reviews
Contemporary warm feel hotel Mar 19, 2011
The Grand Okan hotel looks smart and modern from the moment you arrive on it's doorstep. Walk into the entrance and infront of you, you will see a fantastic multi floor spanning chandelier and to the left the lovely light feature above reception along with a few personal touch objects.
The hotel room was lovely and again, modern, but a little on the small side. However, it served it's purpose so that can be forgiven. I will say that anyone who opts for the land view option should be prepared for a lot of noise. It looks onto the main street which is always busy with traffic and people passing by. Even with ear plugs and the door shut, I still could not sleep well. Needless to say we complained and got a room to theback of the hote which was much better. You probably wouldn't get the option of moving during peak season though.
The staff on reception are friendly enough and understand English well so if you aren't up on your Turkish language then don't worry too much. Although, it is considered polite and good practice in any foreign country you visit, to at least know the basics of their language (enough to get by). The staff in the rest of the hotel aren't as fluent in English as the front of house staff but can contribute a 'hello' or 'thank you.' Say hi to Emin (the bell boy) for me.
The food in the hotel is actually a very good quality and they do have a decent selction. Don't expect full English breakfast on a morning because it won't be there. However, the chef is always on hand to cook you up a lovely omlette, a couple of fried eggs or even homemade pancakes. On an evening there is always rice on offer, alongside a variety of meat and vegetable dishes. The fish is particularly good, as is some of the beef dishes. Desserts were a bit too European for my taste.....very sugary, sticky and sickly things. They did have fruit as well but it was never that appealing. To be honest, I think you will be full after the main course anyway.
The hotel pool is quite small really and the sun only hits the yard for a limited period of the day but the beach is literally on your doorstep if you fancy a change. Be prepared to burn on the beach or cover up well if yuwnt to avoid it. The sunbeds are paid for at the hotel reception and there are parasols available too. The toilets are also payable but with the hotel being so close it's easy enough to run back.
The hotel cleaners always did a good job and were very frendly. Leave a tip for them if yu have any spare money at the end of your stay.
The centre of Alanya or 'Centrum' is around a 20 minute walk. It is best reached by jumping on the Dolmus for around 1 lira. The centrum is very expensive for drinks. The cheapest coke I found was about £5.00 which is ridiculous. There are no entry prices but you are expected to buy a drink or 2. We decided it would fit better in our budget to stick to the cute little bars like Hollanders or the Heiken bar.
Overall the hotel was a great choice and we chose it based on the amount of excellent reviews it had received. We would definitely stay there again.
