Grand Marais Overview
Grand Marais is a small town in northern Minnesota that lies on Lake Superior and is a favorite summer destination of many in the state. While most people come here for the outdoor activities, the town itself hosts a number of intriguing places. The North House Folk school is a well-known attraction and the local artists community is very active hosting many events throughout the year. There are a few shops specializing in northwoods gifts. Most people are surprised by the high quality restaurants in town as well, including Chez Jude and the Angry Trout.
The town serves as one of the entrances into Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The area offers plenty of cross country ski trails, snowshoe trails, hiking, biking, and paddling. If you want to act like a local when you go, make sure to stop by Sven & Ole's and have some pizza or enjoy "The World's Best Donuts" early in the day. Be sure to check in on their visitor list- as they've had plenty of TB's check into this place.
As well check out Lake Superior as the views are amazing here. Artist's point in town allows you to walk right out into Lake Superior to a lighthouse and there are multiple other parks and hiking trails hidden throughout the town. The best known is the Gunflint Trail which takes you from the town deep into the Boundary Waters and through multiple small towns along the way.
