Hotel with good quality, value & location in DC Aug 12, 2015
Finding an affordable hotel of good quality can be a challenge in Washington, DC. This is especially so if you wish something fairly central as well. The Dupont Circle area often satisfies the affordable and good quality criteria, but is not all that centrally located. Of course affordable is a relative criteria and nothing in DC is what one would consider cheap. The Grand Hyatt Washington has a good balance of quality and location and affordable in the sense of good value for your money. It is located at 1000 H St., NW between 10th and 11th St., NW, with only a 5 minute walk down to Pennsylvania Ave., but there is also a metro stop right at the entrance to the hotel for convenience.

The hotel has a large open are atrium for the lobby that spans many floors up to the glass ceiling, which lets in lots of natural light in the daytime. The rooms, therefore, are either exterior facing with some view or interior facing overlooking the atrium and lobby below. I sometimes wonder about hotels like this and it seems a waste of interior space, but does has its appeal from an aesthetic point of view. There is plenty of seating in the lobby area to watch the coming and going of people or just to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The lower levels below the lobby appear to be conference and meeting areas as it appears this hotel has a number of functions going on catering to the to business crowd.

The rooms themselves are modern and comfortable with a decent amount of space. comfortable beds, wide screen TV (good channel selection including HBO), small refrigerator, and coffee maker. The coffee supplies are gratis, but the water here is $3 per bottle, which is sort of ridiculous. There are vending machines on each floor where you can get a big bottle of soda, juice or water which is only $2, and seems a bargain compared to the water in the room, but still a bit high. Chinatown is right up the street, a couple minutes walk and you’ll find some stores there to by some food or drinks to store in the refrigerator. That area is also good for breakfast, dinner and lunch if eating near the hotel is desired. The wifi is free in the room.

Other features of the hotel include a complete fitness center, spa, health club area, which is near the Metro Center entrance located in a stunningly beautiful side atrium area of the hotel, which is worth checking out even if not interested in the health club or metro stop. There are places to exchange money in the lobby and there is a lobby shop as well where you can buy various items, but most of them overpriced. Go to the Walgreens up in Chinatown for any needs. The staff seemed polite and helpful, though a bit slow with any requests. Kind of like the elevators here too which were none too regular for going up and down. Overall though a nice stay and I can recommend the hotel for a DC stay.

The old Chinese Embassy was just north of Dupont Circle on Connecticut Ave, and rates tend to be cheaper near Dupont Circle & surrounding area, but it's not what one would call centrally located. Maybe a 20-30 minute walk to get to the White House from there.

Like you say, nothing is cheap in Washington, DC but I managed to find a reasonably priced hotel one time. I forgot the name of the hotel, but I remember it was right next to the Chinese Embassy.

If you want a cheap DC hotel, you pretty much have to go out to the suburbs. Though Dupont Circle has a great restaurant within walking distance.

Good location Aug 17, 2011
When I tried to find a hotel in DC, I just hope I would not need to drag my luggage for a long walk. The Grand Hyatt Washington DC is close to Metro Center station which has read, blue and orange lines. In fact, from red line toward 11st street, there is a path going to the lobby directly.

Nice hotel to stay.. Apr 03, 2011
It has a great location and perfect for visiting Washington DC for only couple days. Nice rooms and friendly staff. Parking was extra but its like that in any hotel in the area. Try to get a package with parking and breakfast so it will be cheaper.
