Even without a 5Star rating, The Grand Hotel does live up to it's name. Besides it being short of 1 Star, it does feel like it's really, well, GRAND.

This is where I mostly spent my last 2 days in HCMC, and being in this hotel is worth the time and money. Besides, I booked this hotel by (1) chance and (2) the need to get out of Pham Ngu Lao area fast. It was good that I did a little walking that one humid afternoon and asked around for the rates. I was lucky enough that they were offering promotional rates for their rooms. Rack rate for the Deluxe Old Wing Room was $230. But I got it for only $165. Good deal huh?! So I guess it really pays to ask around for promotions.

I was really impressed with the hotel. The architecture is awesome, it's one of the oldest hotels in Ho chi Minh City (built in 1930) and just seeing the exterior can be quite nostalgic. Upon entering the lobby, the old lift/elevator will catch your attention with those stained glass behind it. There's an elegant staircase too that encircles the lift. Either the lift or the stairs, i like using them both.

The staff was ever so helpful, specially the doorman. I can't seem to recall his name but he has this Dr. Seuss Cat In The Cat kind of grin. Really quite a character he is! The front desk was equally helpful and ready to cater to my every need.

Breakfast buffet was fantastic and the complimentary drinks at the Bar Des Amis by the pool is quite good!

As for the rooms, HEAVEN ON EARTH! If you decide to stay at the Grand Hotel get the rooms at the old wing. That should be the point of why you are staying there in the first place - nostalgia and elegance.

The bed was huge and comfortable. I made use of every single inch of it. There was WIFI and the room was kept clean and secure. For some reason though i can't remember if there was TV in the room or if I even turned it on. When I look at the pictures again probably i'll remember.

By the way the room i had on the old wing had this really huge reception area for guests.

The Bathroom is another big plus if you take an old wing room. The black granite floors are so luxurious and the bath tub... i would have wanted to sleep on it. What i liked about it was that it was separate from the shower area.

Lastly, the location of the hotel is perfect! It's walking distance to the HCM Statue and the Rex Hotel along Le Loi, Saigon Centre, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Post Office. And walking to and from the hotel (specially at christmas time when everything is glittery) was just a great experience!

I love this hotel so much that i actually had to take a pic of me wearing a bathrobe. the cheesiness of it all! And No, I won't be posting that one online. EVER. :P

The hotel i was at in Pham Ngu Lao wasn't all that bad... it was just the area that doesn't appeal to me. Pham Ngu Lao is definitely No Khao San nor Hanoi Old Quarter. I just had to get out. After checking in at The GrandBack-faking it in Saigon.
