Grand Hotel IS Grand Aug 23, 2013
I chose to stay at this hotel through recommendations from my family and the close proximity to the ferry terminal.

On arrival

The hotel overlooks the Gozo channel and is an approximate 5 minute walk up hill from the ferry terminal. I arrived to check in just after 1.30pm and was greeted by a very efficient receptionist and a much needed complimentary welcome drink. Check in was very quick and I was also lucky to have my room already available. The receptionist even offered for someone to take my luggage up to my room.

Room

On entering my room (I had booked a standard sea view room) I was absolutely gobsmacked by the sheer size of the room. There was a huge bed, bed linen was of a very high quality and the pillows were very soft, the bed was exceptionally comfy too. The bedroom was spotless. There was lots of storage space which included a huge double wardrobe, with a separate section of drawers and shelves. Two bedside cabinets with two sets of drawers each. A small storage table. A huge dressing table and a another huge cabinet which acted as a television stand but also had three sets of drawers. There was also a two seated settee and a coffee table. There were a couple of electrical sockets (most handy given that I had mobile phone charger, camera charger, hair straighteners etc) additionally for all you guys in the UK, the sockets are of the three pin variety so no need for European adaptors.

The bathroom was on the small size but more that adequate for my needs. There was a bath and shower combined (the shower gave you the option of either a standard shower head, or another with a more powerful shower head.) Towels were changed on a daily basis, there were also the usual complimentary toiletries. Only downside to the bathroom was lack of shelf/storage space.

The balcony was of adequate size with two patio chairs and another small table. The view over the Gozo channel was amazing, with the sun shining on the balcony for the majority of the day.

Air conditioning worked a treat and was most welcome at night time - added bonus was you had a remote control to the actual unit so you could control the temperature yourself. I found this quite wonderful given that in most hotels they have a maximum/minimum limit set on their air conditioning units which you have no control over.

Restaurant

Breakfast: Mon-Sat 7.30am-10.30am:

Dinner: 7.00pm - 10.00pm

I stayed on a bed and breakfast basis only, so can only comment on the quality of the breakfasts. The breakfast area is through the bar area and has a wonderful view of the harbour. Waiters are on hand to find and escort you to a table, and are on hand to serve you with either pots of tea or coffee, hot chocolate was available on request. Iced Orange and Grapefruit juices, together with the option of iced water.

A selection of cereals - at least three choices which changed on a daily basis, typical continental breakfasts of hams, cheeses and spreads, a small selection of fresh fruit and yoghurts, a wide selection of breads and bread rolls,(3 toasters available - 2 four slice and one 6 slice) croissants and cakes. Typical English was also available, eggs, bacon, beans, sausage etc, together with a few Maltese options including hot potato rosti and a broccoli option.

Additionally on an evening there is the option to attend the roof top BBQ three times a week at a cost of 22 euros on an all you can eat basis.

Pool area

The pool area is located on the 4th floor overlooking the harbour. There are small number of sun beds but it was never over busy so you could always find a sun bed. Complimentary pool towels available from reception which was a nice touch. Pool and surrounding area immaculately clean. Snacks were available by ordering pool service over the telephone.

Staff etc

The receptionists were always friendly and attentive and happy to help in any way they could from offering to post my postcards to offering advice on restaurants/bars locally and checking on my return transfer details. The waiting on staff and bar staff always had a smile on their faces despite their long working hours and always remembered whether you had coffee or tea in a morning with your breakfast - or what your evening drink was - just the personal touch makes such a difference. The cleaners and house keeping staff worked non stop to keep the hotel spotless. The staff are absolutely wonderful and an absolute credit to this hotel.

Additionally the hotel offers a complimentary bus service to Ramla Beach and Hondoq Bay on various days. The week I stayed they also offered the chance to visit the village festa in Ghajnsielem on an evening - well worth the trip for the experience of true Gozo culture =)

Will definitely stay here again.
