Imo this was money well spent. The Canal Grande Tour is with private water taxi and professional guide who is really freindly and spoke in at least 4 languages to the passengers. She explained the history behind all of the most famous building on the canal front. I would say the best time for this excurtion would be early on in the day so you can enjoy a nice lunch and relax afterwards. The grand canal tour lasted about 1 hour and cost 20 euro. You can book this excurtion at the info centre in san marcos square.

I like the grand canal best at night or right around sunset. There is less activity on the water and the buildings begin to light up, reflecting off the inky surface of the water. Find a quiet place away from the bustle of gondolas and chatter of tourists and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Evening on the grand canal.
Reflections on the watery surface.

Everyone who travels to Venice of course sees the Grand Canal. It is spectacular, but usually bustling with water taxis and lined with tourists. I'd like to publicize a more traquil side of this waterway. During the low tourist season at around ten at night, I found a walkway that lines the canal next to some tied-up gondolas. I loved listening to the glub-glub sounds of these boats while gazing at the beautifully lit facades.

…wandered over to the two columns of St Mark’s Square, our meeting point for the next segment of our journey - a trip around the Grand Canal aboard a water taxi.    Fifteen minutes later, we were sat inside a motor boat with another dozen people. As we sailed through the main canal, the driver had to negotiate his way past other water traffic. It really was busy. And there… Venice, Italy - Welcome to Waterworld!

The taxi boats are beautiful and our driver zipped up and down little canals eventually entering onto the Grand Canal.  I experienced full sensory overload at the stunning sights and sounds of Venice and all her glory.  Our driver pulled up to what is considered a "dock".  It was about the size of two 2"x4" planks… A new husband, a fresh passport and a ticket to Italy!

Canal.   Almost all buildings along the Grand Canal accordingly back straight onto the water, often with ‘front’ doors and steps right into (or sinking into) the water so again only to be viewed by taking this trip.   Try with a little cunning and patience… Venice : Can falling in love and getting lost become the same thing?

Grand Canal.   A traghetto is a retired gondola used to transport passengers back and forth across the Grand Canal at a single location.   There are seven traghetto stations along the Canal.   While waiting for the traghetto to return to our side of the CanalPark the horse, climb the Clock Tower.

The bus is not like Top Gear’s amphibious vehicles but still functions like a public bus along the Grand Canal for locals, delivery people and of course the tourists.    Still we got our first impression of the Grand Canal from the water bus and saw that it is as busy as any main street with water taxis, water buses, private boats… Venice - Much better than Kevin Costner's 'Waterworld'.
