Gran Hotel de la Paix Buenos Aires Reviews
Gran Hotel de La Paix Apr 11, 2010
Okay, so this hotel was a great price, especially if you are staying there for many nights. Was it the worst hotel I have stayed in? I hate to admit no, but if you are treating yourself to a trip to Argentina, pay the extra cash and stay in a better hotel. This place is on its last legs.
The hotel itself is pretty run down. There is a place to get breakfast but it is in the back with no windows, so the place is a little depressing. The breakfast is mostly ham and cheese with some bread and fruit. Not much, but it will get you through part of the day though the food is so good in Buenos Aires it might be better to just get breakfast but if you are on a budget it is edible. The elevator was just wow! It was small! We could barely fit in it with two suitcases. That and it was so slow it was just faster to take the stairs which was down an old poorly lit stairwell. Still, it was better than waiting for the elevator which was always filled with people from the top floors.
Unfortunately, the hotel was under some sort of renovation and there were wires everywhere including the elevator, though by the tome we left it as fixed. It just stunk because at times we would return to the hotel to rest our legs before heading back out and they would still be doing construction at 9PM. Not good.
The rooms were very cramped and the bedspreads and furnishings were still rocking the 1970’s vibe and not in a kitschy sort of way. I think these were still in use from when the hotel was originally built. The beds are old and sagged in the middle which was not the most comfortable nights sleep. The bathroom like most of the hotel was a little old but it functioned and we did get hot water which is better than none, though the spout is so old and small you won’t get much pressure. Unfortunately, the plumbing is old too and our toilet broke the first night. The flush button got stuck in the wall so it kept flushing so the handyman had to be called in.
The view is well, non existent. Our room faced out into what appeared a vent of some sort. It really was depressing, but we didn’t spend much time in the room. Also, the air-conditioning and fan didn’t work on the unit and the refrigerator was on its last leg. Yeah…
The staff was very nice and spoke English well, though both of us can get by on our Spanish so that wasn’t so important. Hey were very helpful and wanted to make our stay nice, but the hotel is just past its prime! The one plus is that it is by Avenue 9 de Julio, which is the main street in Buenos Aires, though at night it is down an alley that is a little questionable. Still it made for some great photos and we lived.
My advice is spend more money and stay in a better place so you can enjoy your full stay in Buenos Aires.
