Hotel Palacío Valderrábanos is located opposite the cathedral of Avila on a small square near the Peso de la Harina Gate. The area is UNESCO world heritage; it has many palaces and extremely perfect medieval city walls.
Palacío Valderrábanos was built in the 14th century and is named after the bisshop of Valderrábanos. From the outside ánd the inside you can see this is a very old building. It breathes splendor. I visited Avila out of season and could easily park my car in front of the hotel. However, parking can be a problem in high season. After a small reception one enters a big hall with all kinds of medieval reminders. Huge old rooms are public and can be used to relax. The furniture is old and sometimes worn. Still you feel the greatness and glandor of a palace. A reflection of history. I had the luck to get a room (#226) overlooking the square and the cathedral, but other rooms are far less enriched with a view. The room was large, but could use a little renovation. On the other hand, this is definitely not a modern hotel and that's its charm. By the way, the hotel has a fantastic restaurant "El fogon de Santa Teresa". I can highly recommend this hotel with a unique atmosphere, but be particular in the choice/offer of the room. |

I went to Avila after talking to some of my students about it. It was only a short train ride from Madrid about 1 and a 1/2 hours so it was perfect day trip to take. Arriving at the train station i made a beeline for the old town which is surrounded…… city walls and gothic cathedral |
