Graditas Mayas hotel is a very affordable and pleasant hotel when visiting the ancient Mayan Ruins in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. The entire town is accessible by foot with ample eating establishments very nearby. A bank just around the corner will exchange money with no fees. The hotel is basic--a small room with a bed, a couple nightstands, with a private bathroom. Hot water is available in the shower buy turning on the shower-head's internal heating element. The staff spend literally the entire day scrubbing the whole building floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall. Air-conditioning is available for an additional $5.00 US and the units very effectively cool the room. The roof is a beautiful patio area with tables and chairs and hammocks and a thatch-roof covering. A beautiful view of the city and surrounding mountains awaits guests. Utilities in this third-world region are not entirely reliable and you will experience occasional black-outs or lack of water, but these are at no fault to the hotel--it is the infrastructure (or lack thereof) of the region.
They will pick you up for free from the bus terminal, which you'll want to pre-arrange because it's quite a long walk up some very long and steep hills! The hotel offers its own tours of local attractions for a fee. The ruins are within walking distance--about 1 km--so don't feel the need to pay to be driven there. It's a beautiful walk and well-worth taking. WiFi is available for free to guests (get the password from the desk), but is very slow. Across the street is a place to access internet and make phone calls for very reasonable prices. The staff are very helpful and polite. I'm not sure they get many tips because they were very surprised when I would tip them. The hotel--like most other businesses in the area--is guarded 24/7. The front door is always locked and you have to be let in by either the guard on the sidewalk or the clerk at the desk. The hotel is small and they know all the guests, so this was never a problem. We once locked ourselves out of our room and they let us into it without a hassle. Pricing is on the website and very straightforward. I'll definitely stay in this hotel again if I visit this region in the future! |
