Free alternative to Butchart Gardens Jun 22, 2011
I had intended on visiting Butchart Gardens, but I didn't want to pay the $25 per person entrance fee. Instead we visited the Government House near the Craigdarroch castle. You can't actually go inside, but the gardens surrounding the building are free to the public. The gardens were much more vast than I expected them to be, with a wide variety of species, some fountains, and plenty of benches where you can relax your feet and take in the view. If you go around the back of the building you can see across the Juan de Fuca Strait to the Olympic mountains in Washington. I can't say if it compares to Butchart gardens, but it is much closer, and it is free!
