Gornergrat: the 2nd highest observatory in Europe. Jun 19, 2012
the rival of the jungfraujoch at 3,130 m (10,269 ft) lies the second highest astronomical observatory in europe constructed at the top of the gornergrat ridge.

the observatory and the second highest train station in europe can be reached via the gornergratbahn (gornergrat train) which was built in 1898 (long before the jungfraujoch was finished) for the normal people to gain access to the highest peaks in the alps that reaches over 4000 meters and the spectacular glaciers of the valais alps in switzerland.

aside from the observatory, the kulm hotel is also located here, a restaurant, a cafe and a souvenir shop which are all ridiculously expensive for my taste. gornergrat is small in size and perspective compared to the jungfraujoch, but what lacked in there gave to spectacular views that surrounds it.

as over 3000 meters and towering over zermatt - it gave a broad view of the spectacular, formidable and eternally snowed peaks surrounding the mattertal (matter valley) that isnt visible in zermatt itself.

the views here are stunning - including the highest mountain in switzerland, the dufourspitze (monte rosa) at 4,634 m (15,203 ft) that shares the mountain massif with italy, the dom - the highest mountain in switzerland (and the 3rd in the alps) that is entirely inside switzerland at 4,545 m (14,911 ft), the theodul glacier - for its eternal snow (one can go skiing even in high summer) and the most famous mountain in the alps itself - the matterhorn, towering over the valley of mattertal and zermatt itself.

gornergrat offers not just the spectacular views of the valais alps but also a starting point to hike the great gorner glacier (the 2nd longest in the alps) and summiting the peak of the dufourspitze.

the gornergratbahn takes the visitor from zermatt between 6 stations and more than 9 kilometers of track line that winds its way into open spaces up until a high altitude tundra environment for a price of 80chf retour but if you have a swiss pass and tageskarte gemeinde GA you will only pay half price for the retour! same as having the swiss pass - 50% price off!

i recommend to take this spectacular train ride - although VERY touristic to get a glimpse of more than 20 peaks in the alps rising to more than 4000m, specially the view of the matterhorn for people who are not into steep hiking/or technical climbing.
