Gornergletscher, 2nd largest glacier in the Alps Jul 27, 2015
With a length of 12.9 kilometers and overall area of 54 sqm. (and still receding), the gornergletscher (or gorner glacier in english) is the 2nd largest glacial system in the alps after the aletsch glacier.

the glacier orginates between the highest mountains of the alps: the monte rosa massif (2nd highest) and lyskamm (the 4th highest). the altitude of the glacier starts at 4600 meters and drops dramatically between the two peaks to 2100 meters.

the glacier created a beautiful valley of rocky landscape cutting the monte rosa massif and the dome de mischabel massif (the 3rd highest in the alps) and it is fed still by other glaciers such as: the zwillingsgletscher, lower theodul glacier and the grenz glacier. and as it melts, it forms the gornera river that flow and separate zermatt into two.

the gornerglacier is very famous for it's ice caves that forms every now and then and shifting gradually as the ice melts.

the glacier is not visible from zermatt, the easiest way to see it is to ride the gornergrat train (which is very very expensive) until the gornergrat station (3100 meters) but i recommend getting off at rotenboden station (2800 meters), and follow the trail sign to the monte rosa hütte (hut). there would be no crowds here as the trail is used only by mountaineers summiting monte rosa and hard core hikers and the overlook is spectacular as it is closer to the glacier. the only downside, is that you wouldnt be able to cross the glacier w/o equipments, there are stores which you can hire stuff in zermatt or you can book a glacier tour in one of the agencies.
me on the monte rosa hütte trail …
an ice lake formed at the melting …
crevasses form as the glacier melt.
the glacier cutting a spectacular …
