Gordon Biersch Taipei Reviews
First American Brewery Restaurant in Taipei Nov 15, 2009
Gordon Biersch, located in Taipei’s Xinyi District, became the first American brewery restaurant to enter Taiwan since the government opened the market to microbreweries in 2003. In line with the Gordon Biersch commitment to freshly prepared, innovative international cuisine, the Taipei brewery restaurant uses identical recipes to its U.S. counterparts and fresh ingredients to prepare its made-from-scratch menu. Ninety-five percent of the current offering features items from the U.S. menu, including the trademarked Gordon Biersch Garlic Fries, along with a number of regional dishes. Further exploration of regional flavors will be the focus for ongoing menu development.
All beers are brewed according to the same standards found in the U.S. and following the strict German purity law, Reinheitsgebot, which dates back five centuries. The Taipei unit focuses on fresh brewed, traditional beers including Märzen, Czech-Style Pilsner, Hefeweizen and Blonde Bock. Due to laws prohibiting on-site brewing, the brand’s renowned craft beers is made at a brewery in Taipei and delivered fresh to the restaurant each day.
Taking a look at their local menu, the NT$230 Beer Sampler allows you to try all six of Gordon Biersch's hand-crafted beers, including the Golden Export, Hefeweizen (the only ale in an all-lager line-up), Czech Lager, Marzen, Schwarzbier and a seasonal speciality, currently a Mai Bock. As for food, the New York Strip & Tempura Shrimp Combo (NT$820) is one of many mouth-watering house specialties and entrees. Other popular items include six steaks (NT$660-980); pasta and chicken entrees like the Cajun Pasta (NT$480); weekly burger specials (NT$390) and regular items like the Marzen Barbecue Burger; various pizzas, salads and starters; and sinfully-huge desserts like the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie (NT$250). On the night we visited, I had a delicious cheeseburger with avocado.
