Gooseberry Falls State Park Two Harbors Reviews
Waterfalls at a roadside stop Aug 08, 2005
This is a popular place for people to stop as they hit the north shore. A little over half an hour outside of Duluth is Gooseberry Falls. You can pull over, rest and stretch yours legs while watching the water cascade down the waterfalls. If you are a little more adventurous, you can duck under the water yourself! This waterfall has three sections - upper, middle and lower. My photos are all from the Middle Falls.
The park also has great hiking trails and connects up with the Superior Hiking Trail. The views in these photos are easily accessible, but to get the other views requires a little hiking. (I was experimenting with my camera settings - point and shoot digital cameras don't leave much room for playing with settings). The park has a campground, 18 miles of hiking trails, trout fishing and summer naturalist programs.
Update 12/21/12 - I stopped here in winter to see the frozen falls. Since everything was frozen and slippery, I just looked at the middle falls. Very cool! Photos added.
Update 5/15/15 - this park now has a bike station with tools to fix your bike! There is an air pump and several wrenches and other tools that I don't know what they are. There is a brace to put your tire in, or a bar to hang your bike while you work. This is just a short ways off the Gitchi Gami paved bike trail.
I also walked the loop around the falls and back up the other side, passing the upper, middle and lower falls. The water was a little high from recent rains. Normally people can (and do) walk right out by the falls, but it wasn't really safe today. I added some photos as well.
You don't need a park pass to stop at the visitor center/rest area and visit the falls. But you do need a pass if you want to drive to the lake or camp. You can park at the visitor center without a pass for 2 hours, but that isn't much time for some of the hiking trails.
