Satellite Communication Centre Jul 03, 2006
Just a quick review, as it's something to look out for if you are visiting Cornwall.

At the time we visited it was the largest Earth Satellite Station in the world. However operstions were ceased by British Telecom in 2008 and the visitor centre closed in 2010.

There are 60 satellite dishes on the site, and they did a bus tour round them. You could also climb up inside one of them, called Arthur. The site was the receiving centre for the first live transatlantic broadcast.

It had a really great visitor centre, with a really informative exhibition on the history of communication.

The reason for still putting in a review is that it is going to reopen. It was taken over and a project, in conjunction with Oxford University, to upgrade the dishes to receive communications from deep space probes. the plan is to have the visitor centre back up and running as a space science centre.

It's largest antenna GHY-6 started active service on 18/07/2012, so worth checking on progress if you are going to be visiting the area.
