Disappointing, poor-value tourist trap - avoid avoid avoid! Aug 16, 2013
My partner and I stayed at the Goodwood for a 'romantic' weekend from Saturday 10th to Monday 12th August 2013.

POSITIVES: Not many. The location is a 5-minute walk from London Euston station, so it's easy to get to other places in London. When we were moved from our original room, the bathroom was en-suite and the TV had all the channels.

NOT-SO-POSITIVES: Once you got past reception and the first couple of rooms, the hotel was an un-signposted rabbit warren of narrow corridors and paint-flecked stairs. The first room that we were given was small, humid, grubby, in the basement and reeked of damp. The decor was primitive: one wall had been papered burgundy and gold, which was peeling, in an attempt to 'sophisticate' it; there were brush marks everywhere; holes on the window sill had been clumsily filled and not re-painted; and the pull on the blind was broken. The double bed was actually a large single pushed up against the wall. There was little privacy unless the blind was down as the window looked out directly over the back entrance. The back entrance itself was a security risk as it was left propped open, and the lock on our door looked like it could have been forced easily. 'Tea and coffee-making facilities' amounted to a kettle, some dubious cups and a jumble of teabags, coffee packets and milk cartons piled into a plastic basket. We had to ask for towels and there was no room service (i.e. making of bed, emptying of bin, etc) during our stay. The TV did not have any of the major UK channels (BBC 1 & 2, Channel 4, etc). The bedding consisted of a pillow each, an Army-issue blanket, a sheet and a run-down bedpsread.

The bathroom was down the corridor and was cramped, awkwardly shaped and poorly ventilated. There was significant water damage to the ceiling and the lighting amounted to a naked bulb hanging off the wall. The shower rail was very rusty, some small bars of soap that had been provided had rust on them (!) and one side of the shower tray came off the wall when I put my foot on it to dry my leg (!). The bathroom window was situated where all the smokers congegrated, so the bathroom itself smelled as though it was being smoked in.

When we complained to the owner he moved us to a family room, which seems to be the room used in the hotel's advertising photos. The owner himself was hardly to be seen when needed, and when it came to checking out we ended up having to ring the customer service of the online booking agent at 7.30am to let them know that we had been waiting to check out for 15 minutes, the owner wasn't around, reception was locked up and an irate gentleman was standing on the doorstep trying to get in, and that we were leaving the keys in the room and going as we had a train to catch!

Apart from its location, this hotel has nothing to redeem it. It's cramped, overheated, overpriced and nothing like how it's advertised. It badly needs redecorating (it looks like all the maintenance budget was spent on the entrance and reception) and more staff. For the same price (or cheaper) you can get better service and facilities at a number of hotels nearby (and they'll probably do breakfast as well) - so avoid this one at all costs.

Be prepared... May 20, 2011
I wasn't expecting much, it has to be said, but the Goodwood Hotel succeeded in far undercutting my very meagre expectations. For those needing -only- a place to sleep it is certainly survivable; in fact maybe it will even help your trip since you will be compelled to spend as much time out enjoying yourself as possible, as the alternative - returning to the room - will become your mission to avoid, heh.

Whether it's the ridiculously pathetic breakfast consisting of two (bulk supermarket) croissants and jam, the showers that either don't work at all or are stuck on far too hot so at to make showering actually impossible (I thought nothing could be worse than low pressure, but low pressure and scorching hot water wins hands-down... ), or the rash of bed-bug bites you'll likely wake up with, the Goodwood hotel does its utmost to convince you that no matter how cheap the place is (and it's not -that- cheap) your enjoyment of your holiday and your peace-of-mind is worth more.
